Babel is program designed to interconvert a number of file formats currently used in molecular modeling. The program is available for Unix, (AIX, Ultrix, Sun-OS, Convex, SGI, Cray, Linux), MS-DOS, and on Macs running at least System 7.0.
Babel is capable of assigning hybridization, bond order, and connectivity when these elements are not present in the input file.
The program is by Pat Walters and Matt Stahl of the University of
Arizona (both now work at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in slightly-less-sunny
Boston). The Babel Home Page is still up at Arizona:
http://mercury.aichem.arizona.edu/babel.html
see also this page.
The programs are there, and also in the CCL ftp archives: ftp://ccl.osc.edu/
Babel is avialiable via annonymous ftp from joplin.biosci.arizona.edu in pub/Babel/
The Unix version is in the file babel-1.04.tar.Z
1. uncompress babel-1.04.tar.Z
2. tar -xvf babel-1.04.tar
3. follow the instructions in README.1ST
Dr. Jeff Gosper please to report
that he have fixed these bugs and a new version of BABELWin (v1.03) for
Win95/NT is now located on ftp server
ftp.brunel.ac.uk in /pc/chem/babelwin.zip.
There is a windows interface available for the well known BABEL program.
Easy Win Babel at:
http://users.otenet.gr/~nkourkou/freeware.html
with direct link:
http://195.130.120.193/easywinbabel.zip
It simplifies the procedure of convertion and it can be used only on windows (9*/NT) systems. As a frontend it requires the original babel. Of course it is freeware.
